Democrat Senator Chris Murphy was discharged from the hospital on Friday after having a stroke last week.
Chris Murphy, 53, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke last Friday during his son’s hockey game, his office said.
Murphy felt numbness in his arm during the contest, when he was taken to the hospital and later transferred to Johns Hopkins.
Over the weekend it was reported that Murphy was “awake and alert” and expected to recover, according to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.
“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” Herwitt said in a statement.
“He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”
In a statement on Friday, Murphy said he will miss the next several weeks of votes in the Senate.
Dr. Jose Murphy Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital says in a statement that Murphy “experienced a small hemorrhagic stroke. He has shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation.”
“[I] will be spending several weeks at a rehabilitation center after being discharged from the hospital today,” Murphy said.
“As I’m working towards a full recovery, I am staying engaged with my team and colleagues remotely, and my staff continues to carry out our legislative priorities, serve constituents, and ensure the work of my office continues uninterrupted,” Murphy said in a statement.
