The Persian Gulf supplies almost half of the sulphur traded by sea, a vital ingredient in the production of phosphate fertilisers. With shipping through the Strait of Hormuz severely disrupted, sulphur prices have soared to record levels, making fertiliser increasingly expensive and, in some cases, forcing producers to reduce output.
In practical terms, farmers will either pay more to grow our food, use less fertiliser and produce smaller harvests, or abandon less profitable crops altogether. Whichever way it unfolds, the result eventually reaches us all through higher prices and reduced food security.
