Epstein tried to kill himself at least three times in jail – NYT — RT World News

The sex offender allegedly asked his former cellmate how to make a noose before multiple suicide attempts, the outlet has claimed

Jeffrey Epstein attempted suicide at least three times before his death in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019, according to the New York Times. Investigators reportedly found multiple nooses in his cell after his death, a report detailing the convicted sex offender’s final days in federal custody has revealed.

Days before his first reported suicide attempt, Epstein asked his cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione how to make a noose after a judge denied his bail request, the outlet reported. The investigation, published on Tuesday, drew on court documents, previously released Epstein files and more than 50 new interviews with inmates, jail staff and others.

Tartaglione, a former New York police officer serving four life sentences for a quadruple murder, told the outlet the question came roughly two weeks into Epstein’s detention at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he was awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

The investigation found that Epstein had attempted to take his own life at least two additional times before a previously reported failed hanging attempt on July 22, 2019. Tartaglione said he discovered Epstein preparing for suicide on both occasions, including once while trying to tie a sheet to a grate above a cell window and another when he found a noose hidden under Epstein’s mattress.

Epstein’s cellmate claims he reported both incidents to correctional officers, but they laughed off his warnings. His account was corroborated by another inmate, Peter Bright, who told the NYT that Tartaglione had described the earlier suicide attempts to him shortly after Epstein’s death.

On July 22, less than three weeks before Epstein’s death, Tartaglione reportedly found him motionless on the floor of their cell with an orange fabric noose around his neck.

Epstein initially told correctional officers that Tartaglione had tried to kill him, but an internal prison investigation cleared the former cop of any role in the incident. After Epstein’s death on August 10, investigators discovered his cell contained unauthorized linens, including several nooses and strips of orange fabric that could be fashioned into one.

The report comes amid renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s death and his ties to some of the world’s most influential figures. Millions of pages of records have been released since US President Donald Trump signed legislation last year requiring the Justice Department to disclose files related to Epstein investigations, reigniting interest in the financier’s connections to figures such as Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, and Bill Gates.
