Telegram Co-founder Durov Commented for the First Time on the Restrictions Imposed on his Messaging App in Russia

By LauraAboli

Telegram co-founder Durov commented for the first time on the restrictions imposed on his messaging app in Russia.

“Russia is restricting access to Telegram in an attempt to force its citizens to turn to a state-controlled app designed for surveillance and political censorship. Eight years ago, Iran tried the same strategy and failed. It banned Telegram on fabricated grounds, trying to force people to switch to a state alternative. Despite the ban, most Iranians still use Telegram (bypassing censorship) and prefer it over apps subject to surveillance. Restricting citizens’ freedom is never the right solution. Telegram supports freedom of speech and privacy, despite any pressures,” he wrote.
