Wisconsin Democratic Socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong declared that the service industry “is rooted in white supremacy” and that “the history of tipping is racist.”
In a video clip circulating online from a Wisconsin Leadership Summit appearance, Hong, a former chef and restaurant industry figure who is currently the frontrunner in the Democratic primary for governor, made the comments:
“That is in the service industry, we are finally having this conversation about, you know, how our industry really did come from and kind of is rooted in white supremacy, that tipping in itself, if we look at the history of tipping and how racist it is and how it has kept wages low for black people for a very long time. And if you look at tipping now, how different the scales are in terms of who receives higher percentage of the tips over other folks.”

This is the same Francesca Hong who has a long record of extreme rhetoric. She previously posted that “police exist to uphold white supremacy” and called to “defund then abolish” them.
She has urged people to “cancel Thanksgiving” as a celebration of colonialism. Now she is applying the same “everything is racist” framework to the basic American practice of tipping your server.
Hong has long pushed legislation to eliminate Wisconsin’s tipped minimum wage. As a former restaurant owner and self-described service industry worker, she frames the entire sector through a racial grievance lens rather than the realities of hard work, customer service, and voluntary rewards for good performance.
This comes as President Trump and Republicans have advanced popular policies to eliminate taxes on tips—putting more money directly in the pockets of servers, bartenders, and other service workers without the lectures. Hong’s contribution? Another sermon about white supremacy.
