A Michigan pizza worker who received nearly $800,000 in donations after confronting a group of social media pranksters has halted his fundraiser and encouraged supporters to give their money to churches and charities helping struggling families this Christmas.

Walt Z., a Red Baron pizza stocker and father, became an internet sensation after Instagram pranksters approached him while he was working late and pretended to steal money from his phone.

Walt angrily confronted the group, explaining that he was working to pay off his mortgage and support his children.

The encounter quickly went viral, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from people who were angered on behalf of a hardworking American.

A supporter identified as Luke subsequently established a GoFundMe campaign, which had raised more than $784,000 by Friday.

Rather than continue collecting donations, Walt announced Thursday that he was shutting down the fundraiser and asking supporters to direct their generosity toward people in need.

“I’ve decided to pause donations to my fundraiser today, Thursday, November 5, marking one week of your incredible generosity and support for my family and I,” he wrote.

“If you have the means and would like to continue helping others, please consider supporting another fundraiser, a local charity, or a church helping families in need this holiday season.”

Walt also thanked supporters for their extraordinary generosity, saying the donations had allowed him to spend more time with his family.

“Your kind words have meant the world to my family and I this past week,” he wrote.

“I still cannot believe how much you have all rallied behind us, and I can never thank you enough.”

Despite the publicity, Walt said he would decline interview requests to protect his family’s privacy.

“My family’s safety and privacy come first, and I feel this is the best decision for us,” he explained.

His employer, Red Baron Pizza, also recognized him as employee of the month following the incident.

Walt concluded by announcing that he would withdraw from the public spotlight to enjoy the Christmas season with his family.

“Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and for making my family feel so supported. We will never forget it.”
