“I am in favour of closing the Schengen area with Spain,” Mr Tajani wrote on X. “Irregular and uncontrolled immigration poses a danger to national security. The images coming from Ceuta show how the Madrid Government’s decision to grant Spanish, and therefore European, citizenship to over 500,000 irregular immigrants is profoundly wrong and encourages human trafficking,”.

The data coming from the Spanish Civilian Guard estimates rather conservatively that more than 40,000 individuals have crossed the border into Spanish territory.

The town is in uproar as chaos is swiftly erupting. Clashes between natives and newcomers are already taking place, with the Spanish Ministry of Interior turning down calls for a national emergency situation to be officially declared.
