Hundreds of Ukrainian drones intercepted heading for Moscow – mayor — RT Russia & Former Soviet Union

Some 45 UAVs were destroyed in the immediate vicinity of the Russian capital, Sergey Sobyanin has said

In a statement on Sunday, Sobyanin said that the bulk of the incoming drones were intercepted by Russian anti-aircraft defenses away from Moscow Region. Dozens of the UAVs, however, managed to get closer, being destroyed in the immediate vicinity of the city, he said. The mayor did not report any damage.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted nearly 350 fixed-wing kamikaze drones across Russia, as well as in the skies over the Black and Azov seas.

Late in June, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky announced the launch of a 40-day pressure campaign against Russia, involving long-range strikes and clandestine operations, with the proclaimed goal of damaging the country’s economy. The announcement was followed by an uptick in the Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure and maritime traffic presumed to carry Russian oil, as well as assorted civilian sites.

Russia has described the ramped-up Ukrainian strikes as indiscriminate “terrorist attacks” staged to distract from frontline setbacks, and has responded with renewed long-range strikes of its own. The Russian military maintains it never targets purely civilian facilities in Ukraine, striking dual-use and military industrial sites.

The bulk of the Russian strikes have been focused on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, with multiple military plants, drone assembly and storage facilities, and weaponry stockpiles targeted over the past weeks.
