For decades, corporations have slipped chemicals into America’s food supply with little oversight. That ends now. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. just dropped a bombshell, announcing the FDA will eliminate the infamous ‘Generally Recognized as Safe’ (GRAS) exemption. This loophole has allowed food companies to introduce additives without government review. No more self-policing. No more secret ingredients.
The GRAS rule was originally created in 1958 with good intentions. It was supposed to fast-track approval for common ingredients like salt and vinegar. Instead, it became a free pass for corporations to introduce questionable chemicals without FDA scrutiny. A 2022 report exposed the ugly truth: nearly 99% of new food additives since 2000 were rubber-stamped under GRAS, often with little or no safety data. The public never had a say.
Cases like the 2022 Daily Harvest scandal—where consumers were hospitalized after eating products laced with tara flour—show how dangerous this system has become. People got sick, yet the ingredient had been waved through with no proper oversight. That’s exactly what RFK Jr. wants to prevent.
From now on, food companies will have to notify the FDA and provide actual safety data before their additives hit store shelves. No more backdoor approvals. Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner made it clear: this is about restoring trust and putting public health first.
Big Food isn’t happy. Industry insiders are already warning of delays and complaining about “overregulation.” But the reality is, if your product is safe, what do you have to hide? This policy isn’t about stifling innovation—it’s about making sure Americans aren’t unknowingly consuming chemicals that haven’t been properly tested.
For too long, the FDA has let corporations police themselves. RFK Jr.’s move marks a shift—a rare moment when government finally stands up for the people. The food industry can protest all it wants, but the days of quietly sneaking untested chemicals onto America’s dinner tables are coming to an end.
