While the expanded unemployment benefits set the stage for widespread fraud, it wasn’t just individuals getting in on the action—businesses got in too. The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), intended to help struggling companies keep their employees on the payroll, became a goldmine for fraudsters. Fraudulent applications flooded the system, with some businesses pocketing money meant to keep their doors open, not to fund lavish lifestyles.
The DOJ’s investigation is now targeting both the unemployment fraud and PPP loan scams. And things just got more complicated. Nearly all of the fraud flags on PPP loans above $2 million were cleared, raising serious questions about oversight. Reports indicate that about 157,000 fraud complaints are still unresolved, and with over 1,600 investigations open, the DOJ is not backing down.
