After a series of scandals and a major health crisis, Mette-Marit has ascended to the throne of Norway.
2026 was a year like no other for Mette-Marit: she spent time managing two major PR crises: her own Jeffrey Epstein scandal, in which she was mentioned several hundred times in the US DOJ-released ‘Epstein files’, and her son Marius Holby’s conviction for rape and other crimes.
The two huge scandals took a heavy toll, with the Norwegian royal family’s popularity falling to 60% support, down from 70% months earlier.

DPA reported back in February:
“According to media reports on Saturday, the 52-year-old is mentioned several hundred times in the documents published by the US Department of Justice on Friday. It became known years ago that Mette-Marit had contact with Epstein.”
A visit to Epstein’s estate in Palm Beach, Florida, in 2013, created waves, as the Royal Palace confirmed that Mette-Marit had ‘borrowed Epstein’s house’ through a mutual friend, staying there for four days.
“On Friday evening, the crown princess apologized. She had ‘not checked Epstein’s background more thoroughly’, she explained in a statement released to several Norwegian media outlets. She said she had shown ‘poor judgement’ and regretted ‘having had any contact with Epstein at all’.
‘It’s just embarrassing’, she continued. She expressed her ‘deep sympathy’ and solidarity with the victims of the sex offender.”
If that wasn’t enough, an email surfaced from the trove in which former Bill Gates advisor Boris Nikolic appears to suggest that the new Norwegian Queen wanted to have a baby with Epstein, while the late sex offender responded that she was ‘a mess’.
Incredibly enough, after the massive Epstein crisis and her son Marius’ conviction for rape and other crimes, Mette-Marit was still to face an even bigger challenge: her previously diagnosed pulmonary fibrosis worsened considerably, and she had to undergo a lung transplant.
But today, after the death of ailing 89-year-old King Harald V of Norway, his son has become King Haakon VIII, and Mette-Marit is the new Norwegian queen.
