Not talking to Putin was the biggest mistake of the last almost 3 years. Every war ends with a negotitation. We always talked with the USSR and Russia up until this conflict, no matter what was going on. Even during the cold war the west would invite Brezhnev to Washington and London. Diffusing tensions in the world is a noble goal.
Ukraine’s negotiating position is very, very weak. Completely held up by the willingness of someone else to support them and send them weapons. Even with a lot of that the situation is quite difficult, they can’t expect 1991 borders, its not realistic. As an American I don’t support taking on them as a permenant liability through NATO. Their goal all along has been to drag the USA and NATO to fight for Ukraine. We don’t want it.

Zelensky and Europeans, if involved in peace negotiations, are likely to derail it. Once the Russians and the Americans have agreed, they then present it to Europeans and Zelensky
