The Times reports that supermarkets could potentially link the digital ID technology to their self-scan checkouts. This would enable customers to speed up their transactions by simply scanning their ID, eliminating the need for a staff member to carry out age checks. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology, also explores integrating all state services into the same app. This could include claiming benefits, paying taxes, and even a digitalized version of the Veteran Card. While this centralization aims to streamline services, it also creates a single point of failure.
