Hate speech laws make Victoria a communist state – SA academic Dr Joanna Howe

People groups who become protected species under Victoria’s new so-called anti-hate speech laws.

VICTORIA’S far left Labor government has passed laws to to expand the state’s so-called hate speech laws to protect people if they are vilified based on disability, gender identity, sex or sexual orientation.

The changes come under the state’s Orwellian Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001, which is not about tolerance but about suppression of free speech on racial and religious topics that may be seen as “offensive”.

As stated by Dr Joanna Howe, the legislation will allow the government (Department of Public Prosecutions) and various activist groups to further their radical leftist agenda.

For instance, the Canadian man Chris Elston aka Billboard Chris, who campaigns against transgender mutilation and drugging of children, could be investigated by the DPP at public expense if some transgender person felt offended by his protests.

The could put Elston’s life under a microscope and put him through hell with months of investigations and accusations which in turn could lead to criminal charges and jail time. The UK Labor government is already jailing people for alleged hate speech on social media.

In effect, anti-hate speech laws are thought control laws, because they stop people expressing deeply or passionately felt views, for fear that may be ruled as hatred. These laws are essentially communist in nature because they enforce state approved ideology.

“Hate is a human emotion … they’re literally banning how you feel,” says Dr Howe. “They’re saying you could go to jail or be forced to apologise if the activist organisation goes for a civil claim through the Human Rights Commission.

“We know the Human Rights Commission is run by lefties, so it’s not like you’re going to get a fair hearing through the Human Rights Commission or the Equality Commission in Victoria.

“The game is stacked against you, you’ve lost right from the beginning in those places and they could literally force you to apologise or have a fine or end up in jail, all because you somehow had the wrong emotion, or you incited the wrong emotion in someone else….”

Dr Howe said the right to say something or criticise had effectively been taken away.

“Also under this law, what’s terrifying is that employers (and principals) can be vicariously liable for the statements of their employees, which will lead to employers creating more onerous restrictions on what their employees can do,” she said.

Equally disturbing is the fact that the Victorian law also applies to people outside of the state if they “offend” someone in Victoria.

Dr Howe said it was also disturbing that the laws allowed a subjective assessment of vilification or hate in a society that was already dominated by a radical left authoritarian ideology that is anti-Christian and anti-western civilization.

When Bev MacArthur MLC asked Victoria’s Treasurer Jaclyn Symes MLC whether mocking Jesus in the Mardis Gras would be considered hate speech, Symes was flummoxed and displayed astonishing ignorance saying “well… er… what attributes does the Jesus you’re referring to have? It’s just a ridiculous situation. You’re making a mockery of this legislation and I find your question really offensive.” (See 12min 40s mark in video).

This is the low quality of Premier Jacinta Allan’s party, which is dominated by ill-educated feminist and Green ideologues who have little to no appreciation of what it means to live in a free society. Victoria is lost.
